Located in Chugiak, Alaska,
the Birchwood Saloon was originally the Pilot's Grille. It was a very
popular bar and eatery among the bush pilots and military pilots
assigned to nearby Elmendorf Air Force Base. Now it is a famous watering
hole popular with the locals and national motorcycle clubs.

In 1980, Galen Atwater owned the Pilot's
Grille and it was his son that
died at their home nearby. Twenty-six year old Jack was shoveling snow
off the roof of their house when his metal snow shovel contacted the TV
antenna. Overhead power lines, laden with heavy snow were also resting
on the TV antenna. Needless to say, Jack was electrocuted.
Our first investigation of the Birchwood
Saloon yielded mostly EVP. Two distinct voices were on the recordings.
One voice identified itself as being that of Jack. The other, an as of
yet unidentified female.
Jack was very interactive with us during our
investigation. The team lead, Deana, had heard her name called out.
Janet was a witness to hearing Deana's name being called. Other investigators also heard a male voice but didn't hear clearly what
was actually said. Doug was the only male investigator present this evening and was in
another room trying to capture audio ITC. He also heard the male voice
call out.
None of the investigators heard any other
voices the remaining evening, but several were caught on tape and digital audio.
Jack was trying to communicate with us. Knocking sounds were heard on
the recordings after we asked for him to knock as a sign of his
noise making. His response (unknown and unheard by us at the time)
indicated he wasn't making the clicking sounds ~ and he wasn't making
the sounds! As we discovered almost immediately after asking him this
question, it was our shifting bodyweight on the stage that was causing
the floorboards to make clicking sounds. During another request for Jack to knock, he replied, " I am
knocking."
Sounds of a billiard ball being struck with a
stick were recorded, but only while the balls were put away inside the
table. The sounds were not recorded afterwards, even after the table was
set with balls to entice Jack to play.
Deana had asked Doug if
extra flashlights had been brought along. The investigator had
forgotten. A female whisper was captured speaking after this exchange
between the investigators. "Now that wasn't right" was clearly and
distinctly recorded.
During the presentation of evidence to the
current owners, the owner brought to our attention the story of her
granddaughter who was killed by a drunk driver on the Seward Highway. We
will try to determine if the female voice is the granddaughter during
future investigations.
Investigation Evidence: 12 November 2006
Some sounds are difficult to hear. We recommend using high quality
headphones.

For legal, and more importantly, safety and
ethical reasons, Northern Lights Paranormal will
not post locations or properties that are reported haunted or
rumored to have claims of paranormal activity without explicit

vandalism, theft, graffiti, trespassing and loitering, etc.
Whether you want to explore abandoned or
haunted places for historical purposes, photography, exploration, the
aesthetics and beauty of an abandoned place decaying, or hope to have
a paranormal experience, your goal should be to leave everything as it
is so that others can appreciate the place just as you did when you
explored it. The Sierra Club's motto, "Take nothing but pictures,
Leave nothing but footprints", should be a model for your actions
as you explore these places.
